CULTURE & COMMUNITY

Hello Fellow Hokies!

I hope that this email finds you well! I am writing to provide additional information about the 2025 Black Alumni Weekend taking place on June 19th to 22nd, 2025 in the Washington DC area. This event is being hosted by Black Alumni Together and is 100% Black Alumni planned and led! There is a 20+ person Black Alumni planning committee that has been in place for 9+ months. These alumni are working diligently and overtime to ensure that you have an amazing experience. We can’t wait to see you! You can get all the information, register, and see updates at the link below.

The 2025 DMV Black Alumni Weekend is about CULTURE and COMMUNITY! In addition, this is where we can show up as our true authentic selves and be unapologetically Black.

If you have questions about the 2025 DMV Black Alumni Weekend event please direct those to the alumni who are actually planning the event via email at support@blackalumnitogether.com. These are the alumni who can best answer your questions, and they also have the most up to date information and knowledge of plans.

The Black Alumni Together organization is not affiliated with any other Black alumni group or the university. It will be more formally introduced in the coming weeks and during the June 2025 DMV Black Alumni Weekend event. This organization will allow us the freedom to create, be, do, and celebrate all things Black without restrictions. Black Alumni Together is a 501c3 organization registered with the Commonwealth of Virginia and IRS. The registration funds collected for the 2025 DMV Black Alumni Weekend will go directly to event and operational costs including venue rentals, catering, entertainment, activities, and more.

As Black Alumni, it is our stories, human experiences, and contributions that help make our alma mater what it is today. Also, our professional success, donations, mentorship to students, and more contribute to our alma mater’s success every day! We exemplify the motto Ut Prosim and serve in so many ways.

We are committed to the following and want to create value for you in these ways.

  • Offer an opportunity for Black Alumni to come together, support one another, have fun, and celebrate our numerous accomplishments!

  • Provide the following:

    • Networking

    • Marketplace space

    • Incredible alumni speakers who are leaders and experts in their fields

    • Bring together alumni from many different industries

    • Provide information about potential career opportunities from your fellow Hokies

    • The chance to be around friends and reminisce

  • Have a space where we are amongst ourselves during this time that may feel very different to some of us. Finding ways to facilitate community is important to us.

  • Plan ways to effectively mobilize and support current students and each other.

The alumni on the planning committee represent many decades and serve in various volunteer capacities! I am overjoyed to have alongside me, on the planning committee, 3 Black women who are helping to guide this effort. The 4 of us have more than 60 years of higher education work experience and specifically in alumni relations and as an academic faculty member at schools including our alma mater. The Black women, who led Black Alumni engagement at Virginia Tech for almost two decades are involved in the planning and execution of this event. I hope that you see the value add in having this seasoned group on board!

See you this Juneteenth Weekend!

Sincerely,

Laurie Brogdon ’04 and ‘11 & 2025 DMV Black Alumni Weekend Planning Committee
